As we stated on the search engine optimization pages, content and quantity of content is critical to your optimization success. Having a wealth of resource pages, blogs, forums, and other social media really develops your content. This creates tens of thousands of search terms that you never thought of that will show up on search engines, plus it means thousands of pages linking to your home page which means power. If your site has 50,000 pages and great social media, while your next best competitor only has fifty pages on their site, who will get the better placement? I think I know who!
Content management There are many service providers out there who offer content management. Good content writers are worth a considerable investment. Content writers might try to sell you a few hours of their time per month for a monthly fee. If they do a good job, this is really valuable. They can add new pages, and figure out what terms need to be emphasized more. They can also write great blog entries for you. A good blog can add popularity and a good fan base. Search engines give you credit if your site is constantly evolving. If your site has the same verbiage month after month you lose points. Ideally, all of your pages should change a bit over time to prove that your information is not outdated. Making these changes a regular thing on your calendar is something a good content manager can help you with. Leave it to the professionals! And as far as literary writing goes, "Leave the prose to the pros" (my attempt at humor).
Content management in the long run. Imagine that your main pages are refreshed and changed in small ways on a revolving schedule, and that new pages are constantly being developed by your content writers. You will have an amazing size which captivates the browsers. Browser loyalty happens when they think that you and your site are the best source of really practical infromation. It pays to focus on whats really important to the browsers. However, if you have other information which is somewhat important to some people, some of the time, that is excellent too, and gets you recognition. Being popular is life and death in the web business, so make yourself useful to others, and you will be positively remembered by browsers and search engines alike.
User-generated-content This is the killer term in optimization these days. Forums have been my best place of generating great user-generated-content. I am the one who writes 20% of the posts on my forum, and who gets new and exciting topics started much of the time. But, the users have fantastic input about legal issues, companies in our industry, and much more. Its the synergy that keeps forums useful and fun. 20% of our new visits come from people finding search terms on google or yahoo that lead to our forum. Its good to let your users talk about what they want to on the forum as long as its appropriate. But, you can lead converstaions that have keywords in them and hope that the responses also have good keywords. One big problem with forums, is that when you are discussing a particular topic, often the keywords for the topic are omitted from much of the conversation. Words like, "They" replace critical names of companies, and, "It" can replace critical search terms. But if you lead conversations phrasing things in ways that include keywords, people have a tendency to follow.
What to write about? Write about products, specifications on products, studies done on products, people's experience with products. Making it personal wins the game in many cases, because browsers want to here what customers say about your product more than what you have to say about your product. People want to read how Sally was so happy when her widget made her cabinet stop squeaking. People want to read about how Mandy dropped her widget down the sink, but rescued it. Keep it personal in addition to technical. You can also empasize groups of search terms all together on a new page. You can write more Q&A and FAQ's emphasizing search phrases. The sky is the limit, so brainstorm with your content writer to come up with good content.
