  Survey Processing

There are many components of survey processing. There is a survey setup process, survey design, online or over-the-phone gathering of data, scanning hand written results (if any), survey data entry, survey data analysis and reporting. There are many technical options in doing a survey, and many strategies to assess what questions you should ask, and how many to ask.

Survey processing can start with a methodology for collecting data. There are various ways to set up an online survey which is the most labor efficient once its set up. For companies who do surveys on a regular basis, it might make sense to have a program that allows an admin person to change the questions and answers at will. Even if the person being surveyed doesn't fill out the form themself, an admin person can do a survey over the phone and easily fill in the online form.

The next aspect of survey processing is strategy. Knowing what type of questions to ask, and how many are very important. Many surveys ask too many questions, but fail to give the person taking the survey the opportunity to express their opinions about what is important to them. Personally, I am irritated when people give me surveys, because they never give me a chance to tell them how I feel until they have wasted at least 20 minutes of my time asking dozens of questions that I don't care about. Asking not enough questions will leave management without as much data as they could have had. Asking too many questions will irritate the person being questioned. Putting the most important questions first will help if the person being questioned leaves prematurely. So, balance, and introspection are critical in the strategy stage of survey processing.
